TES Ships Two Hydro Generators for the Culliton Creek Project


TES VSETIN s.r.o., the Czech Republic’s leading exporter specialized in generators for hydropower plants, with a remarkable 96-year experience in generator and motor production, has won the tender for the design and manufacture of two generators for the Culliton Creek hydroelectric facility. In June 2015, the generators were supplied to the turbine manufacturer Rainpower North America Inc., for their end-user BluEarth Renewable Inc. located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

This new hydroelectric run-of-the-river high-head facility will have a total capacity of 15 MW currently under construction on the Culliton Creek located approximately 20 km North of Squamish in the coastal region of southern British Columbia, Canada. The facility adjacent to the Sea to Sky Highway 99 includes a diversion weir and screened intake. The powerhouse has two Rainpower, 6-jets vertical shaft Pelton turbines, generators, TIVs, and other mechanical and electrical balance-of-plant equipment.

In the course of the job order implementation TES had to comply with a wide spectrum of requirements. The crucial condition for the delivery of the generators was a successful CSA/UL certification; i.e. from the design, through the purchase of materials and components, maintaining of safety gaps, to testing methods. The TES team demonstrated its expertise in coping with all procedures, requirement, and processes.

The Culliton Creek generators represent TES first successful implementation of 13.8 kV voltage with their first execution, having crossed-over the common 6 kV range threshold, which is typical in small hydro in Europe. As a result, TES Vsetín is successfully trekking into the upper territory of High Voltage projects.  The Culliton Creek generators have been tested in TES brand new vertical test stand, which was designed and brought to life by TES engineers. The new test stand for vertical generator testing has a rated power reaching up to 27 MVA.

The scope of delivery includes 2 pieces of synchronous generators, type GSV1120M12U138-8F60, capacity: 8,000 kVA, voltage: 13,800 V, frequency: 60 Hz, rated speed: 600 rpm, over-speed capacity: 1252 rpm, mounting IM 3011, IP 44, IC 81W. The generators were delivered with all necessary instrumentation, including excitation system and automatic voltage regulator and power system stabilizer to meet BC Hydro, IEEE Standard, and WECC requirements.  The FAT took place in June 2015, both machines were tested successfully with the presence of the CSA Certification Inspector.  The tests included gradual heat run tests, over-speed test run at 1252 rpm for one hour, and transient speed run test for five minutes.
